Pub Customer Visit Frequency Statistics for London Adults

YouGov survey statistics show how often London adults visited pubs by frequency, age, sex and social grade in February 2019.

Pub customer visit frequency varied widely among London adults in a YouGov survey fielded from 25–28 February 2019. The survey found that 2% visited a pub every day, while 24% said they never visited one. Between those endpoints, respondents were distributed across weekly, monthly and less-than-monthly patterns.

These are self-reported percentages from 1,349 London adults. They describe London, not the United Kingdom as a whole, and measure the period 25–28 February 2019 rather than 2026. The results are rounded whole percentages and should be read as survey findings, not as a current national forecast.

At-a-glance frequency profile

The overall London results cover seven reported frequency categories. The largest single category was visiting less often than once a month, at 27%. The next-largest was never visiting a pub, at 24%. Together, these two reported categories accounted for 51% of London adults in the survey; that is a direct combination of the two published percentages, not an estimate of visits or customers.

The frequency profile has a relatively small high-frequency end. Daily visits were reported by 2%, and 2–3 visits a week by 7%. Once-weekly visits were more common at 12%. The two monthly categories were also material: 13% reported visiting 2–3 times a month and 11% once a month. For bar managers, the figures establish the shape of the reported audience: frequent regulars were present, but the survey also contained a large group of occasional or non-visitors.

The categories should not be converted into a precise number of visits. “2–3 times a week” and “2–3 times a month” are ranges, while “less often than once a month” has no upper or lower visit count beyond its wording. The source reports percentages by category, not average spend, average party size, visit duration or revenue.

Daily and multiple-times-weekly visits

Daily pub visits were reported by 2% of London adults. The subgroup results were 3% for male adults and 1% for female adults. By age, the daily figure was 1% among adults aged 18–24, 1% among those aged 25–49, 3% among those aged 50–64 and 2% among adults aged 65 and over. In London’s Central region, 2% said they visited a pub every day. All of these figures come from the same YouGov / Mayor of London survey conducted 25–28 February 2019.

The next frequency band was visiting 2–3 times a week, reported by 7% of London adults. The male figure was 10%, compared with 4% for female adults. Among age groups, the results were 8% for adults aged 18–24, 9% for those aged 25–49, 4% for those aged 50–64 and 6% for adults aged 65 and over. The ABC1 social-grade figure was 9%.

The strongest reported multiple-times-weekly result in these listed demographic groups was 10% among male adults. The highest age-group result was 9% among adults aged 25–49, followed by 8% among 18–24-year-olds. The 50–64 group was 4%, the same as the female result in this category. These are subgroup percentages, so they should not be interpreted as counts of visits or as evidence that any group visits a particular type of pub.

Once-weekly pub customers

Once-weekly visits were reported by 12% of London adults. This was higher than the overall daily figure of 2% and the overall 2–3-times-weekly figure of 7%, making it the most common high-frequency category in the published overall results.

The sex split was 14% for male adults and 10% for female adults. By age, 24% of adults aged 18–24 reported visiting once a week. The corresponding figures were 12% among adults aged 25–49, 8% among those aged 50–64 and 8% among adults aged 65 and over. Among adults in social grades ABC1, the figure was 16%.

The age pattern is notable within the survey’s own results. The 18–24 figure of 24% was twice the overall London adult figure of 12%. The figures for the two oldest listed groups were both 8%, while the 25–49 figure matched the overall result. This describes differences in reported frequency during the February 2019 fieldwork period; it does not establish a cause for those differences or show how the pattern changed later.

For management planning, once-weekly customers represent a distinct cadence from both occasional monthly visitors and more frequent regulars. The source does not say whether respondents visited for drinks, food, entertainment, work-related meetings or another reason. It also does not identify individual venues, so these figures describe London adults’ reported pub-going frequency rather than the customer mix of a particular establishment.

Monthly visit patterns

Two-to-three-times-monthly visits were reported by 13% of London adults, while 11% said they visited once a month. These categories together describe 24% of London adults in the published results, although the survey does not report how many visits each person made within the ranges.

For 2–3 visits a month, the male result was 16% and the female result was 11%. The age-group results were 20% for adults aged 18–24, 15% for adults aged 25–49, 10% for those aged 50–64 and 6% for adults aged 65 and over. The ABC1 result was 18%.

For once-monthly visits, the male and female results were both 11%. By age, the figures were 9% for adults aged 18–24, 12% for those aged 25–49, 13% for those aged 50–64 and 5% for adults aged 65 and over. The ABC1 result was 11%.

The most prominent monthly result was 20% among 18–24-year-olds for 2–3 visits a month. The lowest listed result in that category was 6% among adults aged 65 and over. For once-monthly visits, the highest listed result was 13% among adults aged 50–64, while the lowest was 5% among adults aged 65 and over. The two sex figures were equal for the once-monthly category, at 11% each.

Less-than-monthly visits

The largest overall frequency category was visiting less often than once a month, reported by 27% of London adults. The figure was 22% among male adults and 32% among female adults.

The age breakdown was 11% among adults aged 18–24, 25% among adults aged 25–49, 35% among those aged 50–64 and 35% among adults aged 65 and over. Among social grades ABC1, 25% reported visiting less often than once a month.

This category is broad. It includes people who visit occasionally but less than monthly, yet the survey result does not provide a more detailed interval. It therefore supports a statement about the share reporting low frequency, not a calculation of annual visits. The 35% results for both the 50–64 and 65-and-over groups are the highest listed age-group percentages for this category. The 11% result among 18–24-year-olds is the lowest.

The sex difference is also visible in the reported figures: 32% of female adults selected the less-than-monthly category, compared with 22% of male adults. This is a difference in self-reported survey responses measured in London during the stated fieldwork dates. It does not explain why respondents selected that frequency and should not be generalized to another geography or period.

Adults who never visit a pub

In the YouGov / Mayor of London results, 24% of London adults said they never visited a pub. The corresponding figures were 19% for male adults and 28% for female adults.

The age breakdown was 18% among adults aged 18–24, 20% among adults aged 25–49, 25% among those aged 50–64 and 38% among adults aged 65 and over. Among social grades ABC1, 18% said they never visited a pub.

The highest listed never-visit result was 38% among adults aged 65 and over. The lowest listed age-group result was 18% among adults aged 18–24, equal to the ABC1 result. The 24% overall result sits between the 19% male and 28% female figures.

Never visiting and visiting less often than once a month are separate response categories in the published results. They should not be merged when describing customer reach. The source reports them separately, and the distinction matters: a person who visits occasionally is different from a person who reports no pub visits at all, even though neither category provides a visit count.

What the demographic splits show

The figures show different frequency patterns across the listed demographic groups, but they remain descriptive survey percentages. Among age groups, adults aged 18–24 had the highest reported once-weekly rate at 24% and the highest 2–3-times-monthly rate at 20%. They also had the lowest less-than-monthly rate at 11% among the age groups shown.

Adults aged 65 and over had a 38% never-visit rate, a 35% less-than-monthly rate, a 6% 2–3-times-monthly rate, a 5% once-monthly rate, an 8% once-weekly rate, a 6% 2–3-times-weekly rate and a 2% daily rate. Adults aged 50–64 also had a 35% less-than-monthly result, but their once-monthly result was 13% and their daily result was 3%.

The male and female results differ most clearly at the low-frequency end. Male adults recorded 22% less-than-monthly and 19% never, while female adults recorded 32% and 28%, respectively. At the high-frequency end, male adults recorded 3% daily, 10% 2–3 times a week and 14% once a week; female adults recorded 1%, 4% and 10% in those categories.

These statistics can help frame questions about a pub’s potential customer cadence, but they do not supply venue-level demand, current conditions or a forecast. They are the reported responses of 1,349 London adults collected 25–28 February 2019, published by YouGov / Mayor of London Survey Results.
